The Last Magdalene a novella eBook R Anne Polcastro Reviews

A startling foray into a world run by violence and vanity, with a heroine that is refreshing and unexpected. A beautifully written dystopian tale of warning.
A truly unique and disturbing view of what society's obsession with appearance could lead to, and an engaging story about fighting back. It's also very well written and contains some absolutely wonderful figurative language. I can't recommend this enough, and I look forward to the next installment.
I think this was a great story about fighting back. It's also very well written and has some great figurative language parts that I enjoyed very much. I think you should read this book. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
A stirring, unsettling glimpse into a future in which social structures have broken down into a disparate and brutal caste system. Rosa's strength, tenacity, and bravery shine through in this novella. The imagery of a dystopian city with a hopeful few fighting for a better future is painted well with Polcastro's words. The book was compelling and I read in one sitting. Definitely worth a look!
I really enjoyed this story. In parts, particularly the beginning, it was like reading a super dark fairy tale as imagined by the Brothers Quay. The imagery, particularly in the urban settings, really took me away and the female protagonist was haunting yet, come her development, really strong headed.

The reason I bumped it up from 4 to 5 stars is because it's probably the first time I've ever read references to martial arts in fiction that were well researched and felt natural. It's something that's scarce in fiction (as I write this I can think of perhaps two examples form my younger years) so when somebody's explaining centre of gravity and pressure points in a way that just rolled, I feel obliged to give them some extra credit.

It was also great to see an ultimately serious point about society's obsession with female beauty. It's getting so out of hand that people are prepared to butcher themselves to fit in with some dubious notion of what beauty is. Let's hope that a natural progression to butchering each other never becomes a reality...

I'll look forward to more from Riya in the future.
I love it. I wasn't sure when I began reading. I began a little confused, but by the end I am reminded of women that are strong and can take care of themselves, doing what must be done to not only survive but strive. It is frightening to think there could be a future where this could happen. The harvesting of young women to enhance the beauty of the rich and powerful. Unfortunately I do think we could have the ability to carry this to fruition.
I think I missed the part where Rose realized her strength, I was so caught up in the story. Rose, Shae, and the fourteen year old girl. I am not sure if I missed her name, I never saw it mentioned- if she doesn't have a name I would add one- she's an important character and could add the opportunity for future novels about the three girls. I would definitely read future exploits and adventures of the ladies. There needs to be a continuation to tell what happens to all the people displaced by the factories and those no longer needing to hide.
I recommend this novella to anyone looking for a quick read. There is non-stop action. Rosa is described wonderfully, I can see her making her way to work and her adventure that is spawned when she sees the purple eyes. This novella is five enthusiastic stars! I would purchase this ebook if it is offered. Love it!
I was gifted the novella by R. Anne Polcastro by inkspand in exchange for an honest review.
The Last Magdalene, a novella, is a futuristic noir fantasy in e-book form by R. Anne Polcastro.
Plot Rosario warily walks down the center of the crumbling road to avoid being snatched from a doorway or alley. She is on her way to the dilapidated factory building snuggled among others in the same condition where she considers herself lucky to at least be able to earn a meager salary. The entire city is disintegrating with little to no attempts to repair any of the zero infrastructure resulting from a lengthy period of civil unrest and riots. The resulting social, political and economic structure that evolved produced a super-rich class and one that was extremely poor with another attempting to gain money/status by preying on the already defenseless poor. They were doing so by harvesting the body parts of women from this source. Specifically by court order an unmarried woman could be taken as payment for debts in default. These ‘harvesters’ augmented this supply by also snatching young women from the streets and by gathering others as a tithe paid by outlying villagers to be kept from being overrun by these Mafia-like thugs. The body parts gathered from these unfortunate young women – eyes, nose, legs, hips, any other - were the type Rosario was hired to replace in the ultra-rich women who were almost frenzied-like in replacing their aging parts with new. These seemingly impossible body replacement procedures had become routine from the astonishingly unusual procedures scientists had devised following the prohibition of cloning and stem cell research. One day after arriving at work Rosario discovers she is to replace a pair of eyes from a girl she knows intimately. She flees and continues until arriving in the original village she had left many years before. From this point the prospective reader must continue on his/her own because provision of further details would, in this reader’s opinion, be a disservice. Suffice it to say the action leads to discovery of “The Last Magdalene” and retribution.
Discussion The author has provided a novel from a most interesting viewpoint – she has allowed her fantasy to play with a juxta positioning of an extension of the growing divide between the haves and have-nots and the replacement of body parts already so routinely accomplished with knees, hips, even kidneys and hearts. Furthermore, no doubt aware of the recent successful full face transplant, and with full awareness of the frantic desire for youth demonstrated by recipients of Botox injections and other important ‘spa’ procedures, she has allowed her fantasy to expand even further to produce a captivating futuristic noir fantasy plot.
Very interesting and worth reading. I did not receive this book for giving a honest review.
