Just found out this book was out yesterday on a Facebook page (Sonar Technicians). Bought it yesterday afternoon and started reading it immediately. I just finished it. This was a great read but I think the Towers series was better overall. I was hoping to see a reference as to how the ship got its name to link this book back to the USS Towers series. If you like complex stories with multiple aspects (as in Tom Clancy stories) you will like this book. Chief Edwards Towers series were more about the people and personalities where this one is more diverse and I didn't get to feel I really got to know anyone except maybe Jon and "Doc." I personally like the "people and personalities" format but I also like Tom Clancy diversity, and I like this story.
Another poster mentioned the history of attach submarines information between many chapters. I'm not a fan but it is part of Jeff Edwards writing style and has been in the previous USS Towers series books. I found sometimes I would just skip those sections but often read them after I've finished reading the book.
I know the authors hate it when we say this but I would give this a 4.5 stars if I could.
This is obviously wide open for a sequel and I'm looking forward to reading it soon.

Steel Wind edition by Jeff Edwards Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book had a winning combination of Strategic overviews, tactical environments, and personal perspective. The combination of a benign tropical environment with the brutality of modern naval combat only added to the story. Mr Edwards has taken his research very seriously and the story reflects it. I would recommend this book to any fan of Clancy, Ludlum or Morrell.

I loved this book!! I have read all of his books and unlike some authors (I read a lot) he makes me stay so engaged that I will put off doing what I need to do to read to the end. I also learned a lot of the history of the submarines that even being retired US Navy that I never knew (of course when I was serving no women wre allowed on subs unless we were repairing them)! It was very interesting that Jeff could see where we were headed with North Korea way before this past year. Love all his books (especially when it speaks Navy to me)!! Plus there is is always a paragraph or more where you can laugh so much it makes you make you stop to wipe the tears from laughing so hard to continue reading to end to find out what happens. I highly recommend this book and all of his books!! (And I don’t recommend too many authors, some yes, but not a lot)!!!
Jeff Edward’s latest naval thriller Steel Wind is a phenomenal, gripping, rip-roaring edge of your seat page turner. This is one high octane thrill ride through a very plausible near future – or current day – scenario.
The book has an interesting format, and one that I really enjoyed. Between certain chapters Jeff has placed excerpts from a brief history of the attack submarine. While others have found this distracting, I really enjoyed them. I thought they were a great pause in the action; they were certainly a great reading break point. This book was so good that I could barely put it down and I read it in just a few sittings.
As usual, and with past works, Jeff’s characters are true to life, his dialogue spot on, and his reflection on scenarios and ability to paint both word descriptions and action scenes phenomenal.
Anyone who likes thrillers, naval thrillers, action novels, salty sea stories, current military fiction and many other genres will definitely enjoy this great book. I loved it. If you are a Jeff Edwards fan already, this is a definite must read.
Back to the historical interludes I already had some familiarity with the topic; my father worked for Electric Boat Division in the 1960’s and early 70’s, and I was actually at Admiral Rickover’s last launch of a nuclear boat in Groton before he retired. It actually was a fast attack boat, and I will always remember that incredible experience. My love of ships, the sea and all things nautical no doubt stems in part from my dad’s description of his experiences inspecting engineering systems on those boats. Not that I understood them then, I was a little boy; but I certainly remember them.
Thus having a refresh and learning some new things gratis, as it were, which both adds to the context of the story and the story line I found added to the book as a whole. So I’m not one of the annoyed naysayers. I loved the historic photos and early rendered drawings, too. Keep in mind I’m middle aged now, as a Baby Boomer, not an over-eager and impatient Gen X or Y or millennial. Your experience may vary.
Overall, this was a great Hobbs choice scenario. I think Jeff’s depiction of the American President in this story in no way resembles the current president, and I fear that should this or some other parallel scenario actually occur cooler minds and temperaments will NOT prevail.
As always, my heartfelt thanks and gratitude go out to all the men and women of our military (including you, Jeff Edwards) in all the far-flung places of the globe, trying to preserve this precious freedom and way of life that so many of us take for granted. My own time in government service certainly taught me that our lives and freedoms are by no means to be taken for granted and however well we fight for them, they are hard fought for and won.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a great military themed novel, likes the sea and ships, and likes action packed thrillers. Not for the kids, sorry, there is realistic dialogue including swearing.
Awesome book, get it. Read it.
Jeff Edwards delivers again! I have been waiting anxiously for this to come out. I follow the author on Facebook and so I knew it was taking a long time to make it through DoD review. But the wait was worth it. He really knows how to craft a good suspenseful thriller. Also he has mastered the art of delving deep into technical details but not getting lost in them and thus bogging down the story. You can tell he has done his research. It's also good to see the surface warfare guys 'get some', as so many Naval thriller focus almost exclusively on subs. All in all, if you liked his other Naval thrillers you will not be disappointed with this one. Get it!
