Finally a book which talks to us, lucky ones, who live a fulfilling love life with our "special" special ones! There aren't too many of this kind of books.Mrs. Darkins did really do her research, and a portrayal of the life (and love life) of her quadriplegic (tetraplegic for the European) hero is really accurate.
How many times did I get annoyed with books where the misconceptions regarding disability interfered with the possibility to enjoy a great story? How many times did I put down a book confused "What is the writer talking about? It just does not work like this."
In this novel it never happened. I could concentrate on the sweet love story, feeling comfortable with their everyday mechanics. The book is a very fast and easy read - I devoured in two days (OK, I know I should have written "at a go", but I have a busy life, I cannot spend hours only reading...). And I needed this relaxation right after a demanding exam.
This book could be a nice read for anyone who likes the wounded hero genre, but also for those who are looking for a refreshing little love story (and won't be discouraged by the uncommon hero).

The Key edition by Victoria Darkins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed reading this book. The story was easy to read - the kind of book you could pick up and finish in one evening. The initial story of Carrie becoming Jacks HCA without any prior experience in any way was a little far fetched, but I guess for light hearted reading- it works.
This is a very heart warming story. Lessons can be learned by reading it. In any kind of relationships, you should always weigh "feelings" as to what they mean to the other person. Being there in being hurt numerous times by several, it is hard to trust again . I'm happy that Jack finally realized what Carrie needed and visa versa.
Jack....A man who has lived with his disability for years and didn't let it stop him. Carrie.....A young woman who has met every challenge life has thrown at her. They meet as client and caregiver. What happens next is a pleasant surprise.
Loved the story. Loved the research the author did on making the story realistic. This was about two equally damaged one in body one in soul and finding their way to make one complete person.
As a nurse, I am fairly well versed on the limitations of those suffering from quadriplegia, but I would have enjoyed more romance than a couple teenage style make out sessions . I would have found it more realistic had the author allowed Jack & Carrie to negotiate some of Jack's sexual limitations and revel in their ability to create a beautiful fulfilling intimacy despite them. I never got the impression Jack had attempted much if any intimate relationship since his accident. It would have been nice to experience with Jack what he was in fact capable of.
I also felt there was a lack of exploration of each other's pasts. The author mentioned Jack's tracheotomy & surgical scars but never mentioned many details of his accident or how he felt about it. Carrie didn't divulge much about her past to Jack either. There was just a depth about that I felt was missing.
What was there I enjoyed.
I don't give many reviews but this was a great book and I noticed it doesn't have many reviews so I figured I would give one. I finished this book in one sitting and after I finished it I went back the next day to read some parts of it again that had stuck with me. If you have read the best seller, "Me Before You," and enjoyed the romantic elements and overcoming disability, but were disappointed with the ending and perhaps how dark it was, then you will much prefer this story. I agree there wasn't much back story to the characters but there was enough to understand their motives and behaviors. I paid $1 for this book and it was a steal. Where else can you get hours of entertainment that makes you laugh and cry for $1?
I can't remember where I heard about this book, I think it may have actually been on here. It sounded like something I would like and so I bought this. Or maybe it was a freebie. I can't remember.
What I liked This was short and not terrible. It was a nice book to read while traveling or otherwise a captive audience.
What I didn't like I just was not a huge fan of this book. There wasn't anything bad about it, I just could not get invested in it. If I hadn't been reading this book while traveling, I probably would have only gotten a few pages in before deciding to move on to something different. I think the biggest problem was that there wasn't enough details about Carrie and Jack and so I just didn't care about them.
I thought this story had an interesting premise and I wasn't wrong. I was a little leery based on some other reviews that it was a difficult read, but I didn't think that at all.
This isn't a fluffy story of true love. Jack doesn't suddenly have the ability to walk at the end. Instead, the story had a "realness" about it and didn't sugarcoat the topic of quadriplegia. I found it interesting how the issue was discussed as well as its emotional and physical implications from the viewpoints of both Jack as well as Carrie. Both characters have their issues, yet both were likeable. Carrie's issues weren't discussed as much as Jack's, so I felt there were still layers to her character that didn't get explored.
I read this book in one sitting as I wanted to see how the story would progress. I would have liked to have had a bit more epilogue. Jack and Carrie's story is really just beginning so a sequel could easily be written and be enjoyed for readers of this book.
